Ditch your sunscreen and switch to wearing naturally dyed clothing to protect your skin from the sun!

Dr. A Sarada Devi, a Emeritus Scientist at Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University in India, says that clothing made with natural fiber and dyed naturally actually protects your skin from harmful UV rays when worn. According to Devi, when using Annatto, which is a natural red-orange product extracted from the seeds of the Bixa Orellana shrub, mixed with different mordants, it creates different levels of protection against ultraviolet B rays.

When natural dyes are extracted from different types of roots, barks, flowers, leaves, and seeds and then combined together, they can naturally help your skin in many ways. When creating herbal medicine from the Golden Shower Tree, it is said to give relief to those with upper respiratory problems. As well as herbal medicine, wearing clothing that is naturally dyed is good for your health as well as the environment. According to Devi, “all the natural dyes are antimicrobial and do good to the skin.”

As scientists conduct more research on the benefits of using plant-based dyeing practices, fashion companies are beginning to pay attention, even starting research of their own regarding this topic.
